Hazel Irene Joseph, 93, of Pittsburg, Kansas passed away at 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at Via Christi Hospital. She was a resident of the Sunset Manor Nursing home in Frontenac. She was born November 11, 1918 at rural Arcadia, Kansas to William & Goldie (Briggs) Armstrong. She graduated from Pittsburg High School. On August 6, 1939, she was united in marriage to Melvin C. Joseph at Joplin, MO. Mr. Joseph worked for the Kansas City Southern Railroad for 38 years, starting as a fireman and retiring as an engineer. Hazel worked at J. C. Penney's for 7 years until 1978, and she enjoyed that very much. She was a resident of Pittsburg for 73 years. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her husband preceded her in death on April 21, 2011. She was also preceded in death by her parents and 2 sisters: Marie and Reba, and a brother, Ira. Survivors include a son, Melvin Clay Joseph and his wife, Sharon, of Springfield, MO; a daughter, Krista Lynn Grotheer and her husband, Erich, of Jonesboro, AR.; six grandchildren: Mitchell, Mark, Monty, Morey, Polly, and Erica; seven great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters. She was a member of the Pittsburg Church of Christ, where her husband served as an Elder for many years. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service in memory of Hazel at 10:30 am Friday (July 20) at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, seven miles north of Pittsburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to either the Pittsburg Church of Christ, 802 Centennial Dr. 66762, or to Fair Haven Children's Home, 3132 N. Fair Haven Loop, Strafford ,MO 65757.
