Opal Mae Smith, 94, of Pittsburg, KS, entered into Heaven April 8, 2024, surrounded by family and close caregiver who all loved her greatly.
Opal was born on July 23, 1929 to William and Millie (Meeks) Karnes in Chicopee, Kansas. Opal was a homemaker and a strong woman of grace, grit, and feistiness who held her head high and was an example to many.
She is survived by daughters, Shirley Gideon of Pittsburg, KS, and Sue Orender of Pittsburg, KS; son Rick Stevens of Pittsburg, KS; 14 grandchildren, Terry Gideon, Larry Gideon, Tammy Tierney (husband Jim), Shannon Startin, D.R. Gideon, Tabitha Wilson, Jennifer Baker, Crystal Stevens, Gage Stevens, Chris Oehme, Brent Oehme, Jimmy Wilson, Junior Wilson, and Michael Wilson; 16 great-grandchildren; and 8 great great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Marilyn Stevens, son in law, Robert Gideon, and daughter in law, Kimberly Stevens, brothers, Ralph Karnes, Henry Karnes, and Earl Karnes, Ally Karnes, sisters, Goldie Brooks, Florence Hamilton, Viola Karnes, Leona Farris, Rose Karnes, and Iva Bough.
A Graveside Service will be at 11:00 AM Saturday April 20, 2024, at Mt. Olive Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS.
