Donald Tompkins Obituary

Donald Dean Tompkins, 93, of Pittsburg, KS, passed away on August 28, 2024, at his home in Pittsburg, Kansas. Don was born on February 12, 1931, at the family home on a farm near Byers KS, to Elmer and Jetta Maude Tompkins. He was the 8th child of 11 and had 7 brothers and 3 sisters. Don attended the schools of that area and graduated from Byers in 1949. He attended Fort Hays State College until 1951. Don then enlisted in the United States Navy serving on H.J. Thomas, which was a naval ship, for four years during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1955. He then returned to Fort Hays State receiving his degree in Accounting and Business/Economics.

In 1961 Don and Martha Chaffee were united in marriage at the Mary C. Norris Methodist Church in Burdett, KS. To the union of this marriage, they welcomed three children; Steven Donald, Janet Martha, and Deborah Margaret. They made their home in Wichita, KS where Don was employed as an Internal Auditor until 1972. Don then held the position of Branch Manager serving in Junction City. In 1974 he held the position of Executive Vice President then in 1975 Donald became the president of Western Service Corp. The family was transferred to Salina KS, where they made their home until 1975. At that time Don was transferred to Dodge City. He was an Outside Sales Rep with Firestone Tire until 1977. At that time, Don took the General Manager position of Fidelity Union Life Insurance Company in Pittsburg, Kansas. He operated this business until he retired in 2007. He was very fond of the life insurance business and the opportunity it gave him to help people at the happiest and saddest times of their lives. Don was an active Rotarian when living in Junction City and Salina. He was very active in the Presbyterian Church after moving to Pittsburg. He served on several committees of the church while doing numerous odd jobs around the church without being asked. Donald's children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. Don attended as many functions as he could and loved every one of them.

In addition to his wife Martha, Don is survived by a son, Steven Tompkins of Pittsburg, KS; two daughters, Janet Sifuentes (Bill) of Overland Park, KS, and Deborah Margaret North of Topeka, KS; a sister, Mary Ann Soerries; grandchildren, Drake Joseph Sifuentes, Margaret Grace North, Caroline Rae Ann North, and Ireland Ann North. He is preceded in death by seven brothers, Vernon Tompkins, Victor Tompkins, Wayne Tompkins, Marion Tompkins, Larry Tompkins, Dr. Carl Tompkins, Garry Tompkins and two sisters, Jetta Wellman, and Marjorie Savoy.

A Memorial Service will be at 11:00 AM Saturday August 31, 2024 at Brenner Mortuary with Pastor Changwon Seo officiating. A visitation will be held on Saturday one hour prior to the start of the service. Burial will take place at Farmington Cemetery in Macksville, KS, at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to Presbyterian Church, Fort Hays State Foundation, and/or Pittsburg State University. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS.
