Edward Reeves Obituary

Edward Reeves, 86, of rural Pittsburg, passed away at 7:24 p.m. Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at his home surrounded by family.

 

He was born December 11, 1937 at Erie, Kansas, the son of Fay Eugene and Glenda Lucille (Yarnell) Reeves.

 

Eddie married the love of his life, Mary Jane Byington on May 17, 1956. They recently celebrated 68 years of marriage.

 

Eddie served in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1959. He was stationed in San Diego, California and served on board of the USS Bennington Aircraft Carrier. Upon discharge, he moved his family back to Erie, then to Pittsburg.

 

Eddie worked for 25 years as a heavy equipment operator for P&M Coal Company. The last 1 ½ years before he retired, he spent in Raton, New Mexico in the underground mines.

 

Eddie loved the great outdoors. Many great memories were made fishing, hunting, camping, boating, and water skiing at Farlington Lake. He also loved working with his hands. Everything from remodeling their home’s to building and flying remote control airplanes to his love of trains. He and Mary Jane owned MJ’s Puppies, raised horses and owned one donkey, named Lulu.

 

Eddie was a believer in Jesus Christ and served him thru Trinity Baptist Church, where he was a Deacon, and a member for 49 years.

 

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Reeves of the home; four children, Debi Adam (Mike), Rick Reeves (Mary), Randy Reeves (Laurie) and Sandee Bennington (Tom), Son-in-law, Frank Carpino, all of Pittsburg; a sister, Carol Nickelson (Ron) of Mound City, Kansas; a half-brother, Donnie Reeves (Ashley) of Arma, Kansas; Sixteen grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren;

9 great great-grandchildren; a loved number of nieces and nephews.

 

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Ronda Carpino, and a great-grandson, Jacob Parsons.

 

A Celebration of Ed’s Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday (Sept. 4) at Trinity Baptist Church in Pittsburg with Rev. Jordan Hodges officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the East Hills Cemetery, east of Erie, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 3) at the Brenner Mortuary. The family suggests memorials be given to Angels Among Us.
