Lennie Lee Westervelt, 84, of rural Cherokee, passed away at 8:18 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Girard Homestead Assisted Living in Girard.
He was born January 30, 1942, west of West Mineral, Kansas, the son of Maurice Lee “ML” and Genola (Richardson) Westervelt. He attended school at Star School until his family moved to Cherokee in 1955. He then attended school in Cherokee and graduated from Crawford County High School in Cherokee.
He and his brother, Alvin farmed and ranched their entire life.
Lennie was instrumental in starting the Crawford County Fire District 3, where he also served as Fire Chief for many years.
On August 12, 1961, he was united in marriage to Gloria Mae Antonette on August 12, 1961. She preceded him in death on November 18, 2022.
He is survived by a son, Derek Westervelt of rural Pittsburg; a daughter, Tianne Westervelt of Cherokee, Kansas; a brother, Alvin Westervelt; a step-granddaughter, Darcey O’Brhym; and two step great-grandchildren, Henry and Margot O’Brhym.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a sister.
No services are planned at this time. Private family burial will be in the Cherokee City Cemetery. Friends may leave condolences online at www.brennermortuary.com. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg, KS.
