Mary Lou Konek, a loving and devoted mother, wife, grandmother and dear friend, sadly left this realm peacefully on December 29th, 2021. Her son and daughter-in-law were at her side. She was 92 years of age.
Mary Lou lived a full and active life. According to what Mary Lou wanted in her obituary, she said, “I worked for Puriton Dairy, Don Gray Drug Store, Newman’s Department Store, KOAM Radio, St. Mary’s school lunch kitchen, Cronister Ace Hardware, Pitsco, US Census Bureau, Beitzinger’s Hardware, Restorative Justice Authority and Four Paws Thrift Store. I always said I worked everywhere in town but a whorehouse!”
As you can tell, she had a great way of making you laugh. She also had a way of making you feel loved deeply. Everyone that met her, loved her as well.
She was active playing softball until the age of 55. She was always attending and watching her family’s games and activities. Plus, you never left her house hungry.
Mary Lou Konek was born March 28th, 1929 to Hazel (Gutteridge) and Virgil A. Latty in Pittsburg, Kansas. She graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1947, where she was a cheerleader. She attended Pittsburg State University for 1 and a half years.
Mary Lou married Raymond P. Konek on November 22, 1950 at Our lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, KS. He died August 18th, 2000. She is preceded in death by her loving daughter, Mary Anne Erickson, October 18th,2004 and her grandson, Kaleb S. Konek on March 26th, 2014. Also preceding her were her brother, Daniel “Nick” Latty, and his wife Martha ‘Artie” Latty and Mary’s sister Betty Latty.
Survivors include Randy R.Konek and his wife Nancey J. Konek, of Pittsburg, KS, their son, Kameron A. Konek of Kansas City, MO, her grandson, Lucas D. Nettels of Chicago, IL, her great-grand child Jayde Nettels of Elkins, AR, her grandchildren-in-love and greatgrandchild-in-love, Charlay and Jason Goff and their daughter Phoebe Goff, of Elkins, Ar. She is also survived by her nieces, Kathy Bernard, Diane Smith and Margaret Havens, her nephews, Robert Konek and Doug Latty, 7 great nephews and 5 great nieces.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 5) at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Fr. Chris Rumback as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Pittsburg. A parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Brenner Mortuary, where the family will receive friends following until 8:00 p.m. In respect for the family, face masks and social distancing will be required for the visitation and funeral. Memorial donations can be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Memorial Fund. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762.
