Merle "Mooch" Gene McColm, 93, of Cherokee, KS, passed away at 12:15 p.m., Tuesday, July 20, 2021.
He was born December 25, 1927, at Monmouth, KS, the son of Earl Durwood and Julia Erma (Hardin) McColm.
Mr. McColm served in the United States Army before being Honorably Discharged.
On November 30, 1947, he was united in marriage to Sharylene Clugston at McCune, KS. She survives of the home.
Mr. McColm worked as a farmer, stockman and most recently was a road grader for the county before his retirement.
Membership was held in the Osage Church of the Brethren, McCune and the Cherokee American Legion. He was a serious fisherman/card player, antique/junk dealer and bubble gum grandpa to many.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Allen McColm (Shelly) of Rogersville, MO, four daughters, Sherry Smith (Charlie) of Cherokee, KS, Kathy Stewart (Jay) of McCune, KS, Glenna Lovell (John) of Pittsburg, KS, and Torri Poteat of Cherokee, KS, 18 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren with 3 more on the way.
He is preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, and 9 sisters.
A service for Mr. McColm is set for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 24, 2021, at the Brenner Mortuary with Pastor Max Waldon officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherokee City Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home on Saturday. The family suggests memorials to Horses of Hope.
