Merry Lance Obituary

Merry Carol Lance, 98, of Pittsburg, passed away 11:41 p.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2024 at Via Christi Village.

She was born December 25, 1925 at Pittsburg, to Edward Peake and Edith Leila (Pease) Sherman. She graduated from College High School and later from Kansas State Teachers College, in three years, with a Bachelor’s degree in Education.

She married Dr. Raymond Walter Lance on December 25, 1945, in Pittsburg, KS, at the United Brethren Church. They were married 65 years. He preceded her in death on February 22, 2011.

Mrs. Lance taught school, before she left education and worked in the office for her husband and was a homemaker.

Membership was held in College Heights United Methodist Church, where she taught all ages of Sunday School. She also taught Sunday School at the Arma United Methodist Church. What many will remember Merry by her ministry of sending cards and letters to friends and family, along with being known also as a Prayer Warrior and volunteer.

Merry is survived by a daughter, Susan (Thomas) Miller of Springville, AL; a son, Ray (Cheryl) Lance of Girard, KS; Grandchildren, Sarah (Jonathan) Murray of Birmingham, AL, and Andrew (Carrie) Lance of Pittsburg, KS; and great grandchildren, Caeden Murray, John Murray, Josiah Lance, Gabe Lance and Madison Lance.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and three sisters, Doris Mitchell, Annie Mahan, and Esther Mayfield.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12 at the Brenner Mortuary. A private family graveside will follow in the Mt. Olive Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made out to John Lance Basketball Scholarship at PSU. These may be left at or sent to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th Street, Pittsburg, Kansas 66762.
