Richard Weathers Obituary

Richard D. Weathers, 93, of Pittsburg, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2025 at his home.

He was born 1931 in Kansas, the son of Percy and Katie Weathers. He graduated from Labette County High School. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master’s Degree at Pittsburg State University. Mr. Weathers received his doctorate from the University of Arkansas.

In 1952, he was united in marriage to Mary Evalyn Tom in Fredonia, Kansas. She preceded him in death on 2014. In 2016, he was united in marriage to Dr. Carolyn Brooker. She preceded him in death in, 2020.

Mr. Weathers began his teaching career at Atchison High School and Turner High School for nine years. He served in the US Army for two years. In 1964, he became a professor at Pittsburg State University’s School of Technology in the Automotive Technology Department, where he taught for 48 years.

Membership was held in the First United Methodist Church of Pittsburg. Mr. Weathers was very community minded and served on several area boards, including Class Ltd. He was an enthusiast of planes, automobiles, and motorcycles. Mr. Weathers spent some of his time in model airplane clubs and antique car clubs in Kansas City and Pittsburg. He also enjoyed his time spent riding motorcycles across the country with friends. Mr. Weathers became a pilot in his 60’s. In his more recent years, Mr. Weathers loved attending events at Pittsburg State University. 

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Tremain (Richard) and Joyce Weathers; a granddaughter, Kimberly Gray (Jason); a grandson, Curtis Tremain (Brooke); five great-grandchildren, Fisher, Cooper, Hailey, Devin, and Adalyn; and close friend, Mary Peterson.

He was preceded by his parents, his wives, and an infant daughter.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday (March 1st) at the Brenner Mortuary with Rev. Mark Chambers officiating. Burial will follow in the McCune City Cemetery, McCune, Kansas. Memorial donations can be made to PSU Foundation and or Class Ltd. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS.
