Obie Samuel “Sam” Pickel, 90, of Pittsburg, passed away at 10:18 a.m. Sunday, April 25, 2021 at his home surrounded by family.
He was born December 14, 1930 at Greenville, South Carolina, to William Wayne Sr. and Nora (Skelton) Pickel. He graduated from Six Mile High School.
Mr. Pickel served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
On June 26, 1954, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Entrekin at Pickens, South Carolina. They lived mostly in Greenville, South Carolina before moving to Pittsburg in 2002.
Membership was held in the Trinity Baptist Church. Sam was a former Deacon in the church. Mr. Pickel took great pride in his yard and was the recipient of the Pittsburg Beautiful Award in September 2011.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn of the home; a daughter, Denise Calloway and her husband, Terry of Pittsburg; a brother, W. Earl Pickel of Beaufort, South Carolina and a sister, Elizabeth (Lib) Guerry of West Columbia, South Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, W.W. (Bill) Pickel, Jr., and Donald Bruce Pickel and two sisters, Margaret Davis and Sarah Powell.
The family would also like to thank Mr. Pickel’s caregivers from Caring Hearts and Avalon Hospice for the special care they provided during these past few months.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at the Brenner Mortuary. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday (April 30) in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Pickens, South Carolina under the direction of Dillard Memorial Funeral Home in Pickens, South Carolina. Military honors will be presented by the US Army. The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association.
