Thomas Reitan Obituary

Tom Reitan, 69, of Independence, Missouri, living in Pittsburg for work, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2023.

He was born March 4, 1954, the son of Burton Thomas and Jeanne (Johnson) Reitan in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated from Richfield High School and attended college at Marshall where he received an Associate’s degree in Business.

Mr. Reitan served in the United States Army for three years.

Tom and Janie have been united since July 10, 1995. They resided in Independence, Missouri. Shortly after they were united, they entered the Casino industry in the fall of 1995 going to dealers school. They helped with the opening of the Station Casino in Kansas City. In 2011, they went to work at the newly opened Boot Hill Casino in Dodge City, Kansas. It was at this time they bought their motorhome and enjoyed working and traveling. In February 2017, they came to Pittsburg to train staff at the newly opened Kansas Crossing Casino. Tom was an opening team member for the casino, where he was a Table Games Dealer. After meeting and making new friends through the casino, they decided to stay in Pittsburg and work at the casino.

Mr. Reitan was of Lutheran faith. He loved to travel, cook and grill out with friends and family, but he was most proud of his family and loved spending time with them.

In addition to his wife, Janie of the home, he is survived by his four children, Steve Reitan (Judy) of Buckeye, AZ, Carla Hartley (Shawn) of Independence, MO, Raymond Hartley of Richmond, MO, and Jennifer Reitan (Anne) of Omaha, NE; two brothers, John Reitan of Lakeville, MN and David Reitan (Kathy) of Andover, MN; nine grandchildren, Ryley, Carter (Kayla), McGwire, Cole, Jae, Sae, Alex, Grae, and Payton; and several nieces and nephews, including Andi (Tommy), Theresa (Chad) and Jason (Kaela), Billy Blankenship (Kat), and great-niece, Laney; two brothers-in-law, Raymond Yandle, Jr of Independence, MO and Steven Yandle of Clinton, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers-in-law, Bill Blankenship and Paul Yandle; and two sisters-in-law, Rosalie Shamp and Pat Buehler.

A Remembering Event of Tom’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday (April 19th) at the Corral at Kansas Crossing Casino Event Center. A private family burial will take place at a later date at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, friends may give to the Humane Society or Alzheimer’s Association. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS  66762.
