Thomas Edward Spurgeon

Thomas (Tom) Edward Spurgeon Sr. of Pittsburg, KS, passed away on October 23, 2021, at
his home in Pittsburg, KS.

Tom Sr. was born on October 7th, 1936, in Akron, OH, and attended Coventry High School.
While in high school, Tom met Dana Kay Goodall and together welcomed the first of three
children, Tom Jr. Tom Sr. continued his education in 1956 by attending Kent State University.
In 1960, Tom Sr., Dana and Tom Jr. moved to Long Beach, CA, where Tom Sr. was employed
at Stuart Pharmaceuticals. While employed at Stuart, Tom Sr. was the recipient of numerous
sales performance awards.

A baby girl was welcomed to the family in 1962, with the addition of Beth Spurgeon (Smith).
In 1969, Tom Sr. Dana, Tom Jr. and Beth started their move to Miami, OK, but quickly changed
plans and located to Independence, KS, where they opened Action Auto Parts.

The third and final addition to the Spurgeon family was welcomed in 1974, with the addition of
Alison Spurgeon (Babb). The family continued to operate the business until 1980.
Tom Sr. and Dana divorced in 1982.

Tom Sr. owned and operated a number of businesses in Washington, Arizona and Ohio from
1983 through the early 2000’s. Before his retirement, Tom Sr. enjoyed shared ownership in
the Brazenhead Pub and Restaurant, Dublin, OH.

During a Coventry High School reunion in 2005, Tom Sr. rekindled a high school friendship
with Eleanor Holland and the two married. She survives at the home.

Tom Sr. has always been known by his friends as a “man who lived life on his terms and tried to get the most out of it.” In addition to his wife, Eleanor and three children, Tom Sr.
leaves behind three grandchildren; Lily, Emily, Roman Babb, two son-in-laws; Tim Babb and
Jonathan Smith and one daughter-in-law; Judy Spurgeon.

A private family gathering is planned. Memorials can be submitted to Brenner Mortuary,
114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762 in care of Shriner’s Hospital for Children. Friends may
also leave condolences online at www.brennermortuary.com . Arrangements are under
the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg, KS.
