Pastor Wilbert Eugene Colbert, 73, of Coffeyville, Kansas, passed peacefully at 12:15 a.m. Thursday, August 24, 2023 at Pitttsburg Care and Rehab.
He was born February 2, 1950, the son of James Otis Cole and Elizabeth Ann Lewis (Colbert). He attended Longfellow grade schools and graduated from Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville in 1968.
Wilbert Eugene served in the United States Army from April 28, 1968 till he was honorably discharged on January 13, 1976.
He served as the Pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Coffeyville for many years. In addition to serving as a pastor, Wilbert Eugene was also a carpenter, a great father, and a prominent member of the Southeast Kansas Community. He was diagnosed with dementia in 2015 and ultimately succumbed to this disease in 2023.
He is survived by his uncle, Herman Colbert of Mansfield, Texas, his aunt, Carolyn Cain of Wichita, Kansas; his uncle, Oliver Colbert of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; his children, Corey Cole of Radcliff, Kentucky, DeShannon Cole of Florida, Gabriel Colbert of Kansas City, Missouri, Juan Colbert of Kansas City, Missouri, Eric Wright of Topeka, Kansas, Genea Colbert of San Marcos, Texas, Ashantea Hayden of Independence, Kansas and Laurell Latimer of South Carolina; and twelve grandchildren, Davon Cole, Corey J. Cole, and Alyssa Cole Andrea Colbert, Kamya Colbert, Cameron Colbert, Camden Colbert, Andrew Wright Kaitlyn Wright Se`Riyah Elizabeth Hartz, Se`vanah Elise Hartz, Se`vaiah Elaine Hartz.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Otis Cole and Elizabeth Ann Lewis (Colbert).
A graveside funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, September 8, 2023 at the National Cemetery in Fort Scott, Kansas with Rev. Robert Montgomery officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Brenner Mortuary. The procession will leave the funeral home at 12:30 p.m. to go to the cemetery. Graveside Military rites will be provided by the U.S. Army Funeral Detail. Honors and respect may be paid to Rev. Colbert. These may be left or mailed to Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary.
